Auschwitz- Birkenau, unfortunately, can be construed as a symbol of world’s cruelty, terror, genocide and atrocities during the WWII. The camp was built in 1940 by Nazis in the suburbs of Oświęcim. The total number of deaths and executions in this place is approximately 1.5 million people, who were perceived by the Nazis as minor and interior to “Aryans”. In 1979 the place was inscribed in UNESCO Cultural and Natural World Heritage list and every year hundreds of thousands of people visit it to commemorate the victims of the Nazi ideology. Ojców National Park is located about 25 kilometres outside the Cracow in the area called: Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska (“jura” – the Jurassic, geology term). The name of the area comes from the lie of the land which was shaped in the period of the Jurassic. Ojców National park is known for its caves, calcareous rocks (including Hercules’ mace and Cracovian Gate) and the castles: Ojców Castle and Pieskowa Skała Castle. Moreover, the park is also a source of myths and legends about medieval Cracow and Polish monarchs. Ojcowski Park Narodowy offers plenty of attractions and magical breath-taking views.

A tour to Zakopane and Tatra Mountains can also be seen as a good plan to spend a day outside Cracow. Zakopane as a winter capital of Poland lies close to Tatra Mountains and is a popluar tourist destination for both foreign tourists and the locals. What is so special about Zakopane ? However, if you are in Zakopane, make sure that you’ll get high enough to see the panorama of Tatra Mountains. Along with visiting Zakopane it’s worth to see Chochołów village with original highlander’s architecture and thermal pools located nearby. Thermal pools are extremely popular during the winter, when a hot thermal waters seem to besoothe tired bodies. Outdoor swimming pools with hydro massaging and saunas guarantee perfect relax for all muscles, and while bathing outdoors you can still admire the views of mountains. Thermal pools also are great entertainment for a whole family.

Wieliczka- salt underground city – Cracow local tours
Wieliczka Salt Mine, as one of Poland’s most precious cultural monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and therefore is often described as a must see spot in the Cracow neighbourhood. The mine continuously produced salt from the 13-th century until 1996.
The tourist route is 135 meters deep and 3.5 kilometres long. The underground walking tour, which takes about 2 hours includes seeing numerous rock salt statues, chandeliers and a magnificent cathedral chamber. He usually describes the daily life of miners and presents legends and myths (e.g. The legend of St. Kinga) associated with Wieliczka Salt Mine.
